Jakarta, May 8, 2023 - It is no longer a secret that Gayo coffee from the mountains of Aceh is one of the most popular Arabica coffee varieties among the Indonesian and international communities. Gayo coffee adds to the reputation of Indonesian coffee as one of the export commodities that continues to contribute to the Indonesian economy.
Behind the pleasure of a cup of Gayo coffee lies the hard work of farmers who cultivate coffee plants and process them into quality coffee beans that can be enjoyed by people around the world. The farmers who are part of the Panca Gayo Coffee Cooperative are an integral part of Indonesia's export supply chain and currently receive support from the Regional Office of the Directorate General of State Wealth (DJKN) Aceh, the Cooperative and SME Agency of Bener Meriah Regency, which has been formed into a coffee production center.
This coffee production center is part of the Coffee Cluster Village in Aceh Province. Currently, there are 250 coffee farmers spread across ten villages in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh, who are the backbone of the economy in the Devisa Village.
The success of these farmers is attributed to the involvement of the Bener Meriah Regency Government and the Aceh Provincial Government, collaborating with Lembaga Pembiayaan Ekspor Indonesia (LPEI) or Indonesia Eximbank, and supported by Bank Syariah Indonesia. This collaboration has revitalized the export ecosystem in the region, enabling them to become sustainable export players.
"We appreciate the collaboration with LPEI, which has made the farmers more aware of the importance of quality to make their products export commodities. LPEI's facilitation has opened up opportunities for farmers to see that their products can be accepted in the global market," said Rionald Silaban, the Director General of State Wealth at the Ministry of Finance during the inauguration of the Gayo Coffee Cluster Village in January.
According to the export data from the Aceh Provincial Government in 2022, the total export of Acehnese coffee products has contributed USD 47.6 million or around IDR 701.4 billion with a coffee volume of approximately 7,255.8 tons.
Robusta coffee also has its enthusiasts. In Subang Regency, West Java, 242 coffee farmers have successfully exported 19.2 tons of commodities to Egypt at the beginning of 2023 and exported 18 tons of Arabica coffee to Saudi Arabia in 2021. The empowerment of these farmers is carried out through the Gunung Luhur Berkah Producer Cooperative under the auspices of the Coffee Cluster Village in Subang, which is spread across six villages: Cisalak, Nagrak, Cupunagara, Darmaga, Sukakerti, and Pasanggrahan.
Reflecting on this experience, R. Gerald Grisanto, the Head of Consulting Services Division at LPEI, stated that the mentoring and training provided by LPEI to the coffee farmers in Subang have had a positive impact, resulting in a 60% increase in village income compared to before.
"The training we have provided is aimed at expanding export market access, improving coffee cultivation and processing capabilities, and equally important, refining financial reporting procedures," he added.
